My great-grandfather, Robert Lee FOLEY, born 1859-1864 in Virginia, and died in Nicholas County ~Nov.1911, seems to have lived and died without very many written records! There is no record of his burial in Richwood Cemetery, though his daughter, Ruth Jane FOLEY DOTSON, pointed out the location before she died at the feet of a child, Cleo TINGLER, in the Oddfellows section. There is no stone. He married Mary Elizabeth WINE in 1883 and lived for a while in Braxton County near Rose Hill Cemetery. Family tradition states that his father was Patrick "Jim" FOLEY who arrived as a youth from County Cork, Ireland, and served as a Confederate in the Civil War. We have found a Patrick in the 8th, 14th, 19th (same one) Virginia Cavalries, and in the 1st Battalion out of Alleghany Co., VA. He supposedly died in the war around Petersburg, VA, but there is no record of his burial in the cemeteries there. Robert's mother, again, according to tradition, was "Liz" ROADS.
He was reared by John L. and Nancy(PLYMAN)QUICKLE, and appears with them in all censuses starting with the one in 1870. We have not found an adoption record of any kind, however, nor can we locate Liz. Anyone having any knowledge of these Foleys or possible ROADS, please respond! Thanks.
